Description
Boerseep is a traditional South African, Afrikaans soap made from animal fat, predominantly beef tallow.
Tallow soap on skin is nourishing, gentle and kind and suitable for all skin types, but especially the most sensitive skins.
This soap can also happily be used for laundry and many an Afrikaans speaking South African swears by it to this day.
Vegetarians and Vegans, may contact me directly, if they wish to have a coconut oil Laundry bar. I will custom make soaps with pleasure
MYTHS, STORIES & INSPIRATION
This soap story lies deep in the history of the Great Trek and Voortrekker days and likely even way before that.
The Great Trek was a Northward migration of Dutch-speaking settlers whose arrival in the country dates back to 1652. They travelled by ox wagon trains from the Cape Colony into the interior of South Africa from 1836 onwards, seeking to escape and live beyond the Cape’s British colonial administration.
Life was tough with very limited resources for the Voortrekkers. Minimal wastage made sense, as it should for all of us.
The hard Ox fat that surrounds the kidneys was used and lye/caustic soda made from the ashes from their fires and was all boiled in cauldrons.
Thankfully times have moved on and we now no longer have to stand over boiling cauldrons and deal with the harsh caustic soda (lye) making that burnt their hands, being without access to gloves and protective gear. The soap that washed your body also had to wash your dishes.
These tannies left a legacy.
